The Firulli laboratory is interested in gaining an understanding of the transcriptional control modulating cell specification and differentiation. The central focus has been gaining an understanding of the role that the Twist-family bHLH factors play in this process. A number of approaches are employed, including promoter analysis, analysis of post-translational modifications that result in changes in Twist factor protein-protein complexes, gene targeting, as well as standard molecular and developmental techniques. Projects developing novel mouse models and furthering the understanding of Twist protein functional properties are available. The ideal candidate should be an inquisitive, goal-oriented individual with a strong interest and background in molecular and/or developmental biology.
